Morning

Breakfast in Chelsea Market

Skip the hotel breakfast and start the day at the stylish Chelsea Market. Until 1950 this was home to the National Biscuit Company, makers of the popular Oreo cookies. After standing empty for forty years, the building was transformed into a lively market hall full of delis, cafes and bakeries. Get your coffee here at Ninth Street Espresso and score a sandwich from the Fat Witch Bakery. For captivating cupcakes and cookies in all shapes and sizes, Eleni's is the place to be.

Afternoon

The giants of New York

New York City and skyscrapers are as inseparable as doughnuts and glazing so it’s no wonder Manhattan has a Skyscraper Museum. Although not large, it contains interesting information about the architecture, design and function of New York's most famous skyscrapers. In addition, the museum sheds light on some of the world's tallest buildings and there is an exhibition about the old and new World Trade Center.

Evening

Dining on Stone Street

While it may be all bustle during daytime, the Financial District is not the most lively part of town at night– except for one place: Stone Street. Made up of a succession of restaurants and cosy bars, this picturesque cobblestoned street is tucked between the high-rises where business deals are closed and market prices determined. Everyone sits outdoors in summer and enjoys the various festivals, while in wintertime Stone Street Tavern is the designated spot for a lovely glass of wine.

Morning

Visiting Santa Claus

Start the day with a visit to Santa Claus. According to the film Miracle on 34th Street, the home of the one and only real Santa is Macy's. And the department store hasn’t been shy to capitalise on this legend with its spectacular Santa Land. Elves, reindeer and lovely Christmas trees form the setting for Santa Claus to receive hundreds of children a day. There’s no reason to test his beard – after all, you already know he’s real. Make sure you get there early to avoid the crowds.

The lights of Dyker Heights

As night falls, there's no better place to look at Christmas lights than Dyker Heights. This is Christmas in the superlative, with gigantic Santas, scores of Rudolphs and tens of thousands of lights decorating the streets of this Brooklyn neighbourhood.

The show attracts thousands of visitors every year and is even reported on national television. Make sure you don’t miss Lucy Spata’s house at 84th Street. It’s a true toy wonderland, with soldiers, angels and happy snowmen ruling the garden.
