The best neighbourhood in Rome

Discover Trastevere

The medieval working-class neighbourhood of Trastevere on the ‘other side’ of the River Tiber is one of the most charming areas of Rome. Authentic gelato, the best cookies in town and aperitivos in a trendy cocktail bar: we’ve made a list of must-visit spots.

Andiamo!

Trastevere literally translates as 'on the other side of the Tiber'

Although only a 15-minute walk from the historic city centre, this rione exudes a vibrant small town vibe. The residents of this popular neighbourhood consider themselves to be the real Romans: in the maze of narrow streets around the Piazza de Santa Maria – the heart of the district – time seems to have stood still. This is until dusk, when the roll-down shutters of the bars go up and people flock to the patios for an aperitivo and a lively night out on the town.

Fior di Luna

Authentic Italian gelato

A visit to Rome isn’t complete without sampling ice cream in an authentic gelateria. Fior di Luna still makes ice cream the old fashioned way, using only natural ingredients: the vanilla comes from Tahiti, the pistachio nuts from Bronte, the licorice root from Rossano and the pine nuts from San Rossore. The home-made chocolates are also delicious and much easier to take home.
