Explore the Canadian Rocky Mountains

The Rockies rock!

If you are looking for an original winter sport destination, then you really should check out the Canadian Rocky Mountains. You’ll encounter fewer people, less queuing at the ski lifts and all the space you need on the slopes. The Rockies are also guaranteed to have a thick layer of beautiful powder snow.

iFly tip: Visit Banff – its eastern location offers plenty of sun, snow and spectacular scenery!

Wintersports paradise

One ski pass is all you need to access the 26 ski lifts in the three resorts of Lake Louise, Sunshine and Norquay. All the slopes are stunning, particularly those of Lake Louise, with downhill runs winding through the trees. Remember to pause once in a while to take in the amazing views over the majestic Rockies, and listen to the quiet ‘swoosh, swoosh’ sound of skis slicing through crisp white snow.

Banff is the birthplace of Heliskiing so it is the perfect place to give this extreme sport a try. If Nordic skiing is more your thing then travel to Canmore, the training ground for Nordic skiing champions from around the world.

Banff it up

Banff National Park, which includes the town of Banff, is the world’s oldest national park and offers the most unspoilt panoramas. Although Banff itself is pretty small, it has plenty of après-ski opportunities. Before you dive into the nightlife though, take a dip in the warm water springs that made the town famous. For a perfect picture moment, rent an old-fashioned swimming costume at the Upper Hot Springs.

“What makes Banff unique is its wide array of outdoor sports – you can do pretty much anything except surf!”

Extreme sports

Banffians come up with the strangest things to keep themselves busy in winter, including diving under the ice of Lake Minnewanka with an electric heat vest. Other activities are ice climbing, igloo building and ice walking near frozen waterfalls. It’s no wonder that adventurer Will Gadd feels at home here.

The Banff Springs Hotel

The Banff Springs Hotel is the ultimate example of the luxurious château hotels that were built around 1900 for the very first tourists to the region. In fact ‘luxurious’ is an understatement when talking about this iconic hotel, especially for those guests who have access to the special Gold Lounge (afternoon drinks included) and their own guest manager. The Banff Springs Hotel offers much more, such as ice hockey on frozen lakes while a chef stands on the sidelines preparing delicious winter snacks including hotdogs and hot chocolate.

The spa of the Banff Springs Hotel is almost as famous as the hotel itself. Try the après-ski massage and give your sore muscles a well-earned treat.

Lake Louise & Jasper

Banff National Park is also home to Lake Louise, one of the most magical lakes you will ever encounter. The lake owes its stunning emerald-green colour to the glaciers that flow into it and then break up. There are numerous stunning trails for walking, cycling or horse riding.
