Metropolis among the vineyards

The energetic vibe of

Santiago

The mighty Andes raises the Santiago skyline to unparalleled heights: the view of the snow-capped mountains rising up behind the modern skyscrapers is very impressive. Over the last few decades, the Chilean capital has blossomed into a city with character and a captivating energy.

Chess at Plaza de Armas

The heart of the city

Plaza de Armas is the historic and symbolic heart of Santiago. It also happens to be the centre of Chile, as all distances to the rest of the country are measured from this square. The city hall, post office and cathedral from 1775 surround this lively city centre.

Children play around the fountains, lovers sit on benches in the green parks and old men play a round of chess. Anyone can challenge the players to a game, but keep in mind: they are not easy to beat!

Great height

Cerro San Cristóbal

A park, two botanical gardens, two swimming pools and a panoramic view of Santiago: Cerro San Cristóbal is one of the city's top tourist destinations. The hill towers 860 metres above the city. On a clear day you can even spot the snow-capped peaks of the Andes. The ride alone is worth the trip: a cable car whisks you from the bottom of the hill to Plaza Bellavista. From here you still have a short climb to the top which is crowned with a 22-metre-high statue of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción, the Virgin Mary.

A colourful neighbourhood

Artistic Bellavista

One of Santiago's most beloved neighbourhoods, Bellavista, lies at the foot of Cerro San Cristóbal. The many galleries, colourful houses and casual bistros give this barrio an artistic and cultural vibe. In the daytime, visit Pío Nono to browse for the perfect lapis lazuli. This azure blue gem is a sought-after souvenir.

At night, locals flock to the dozens of lively bars and restaurants. One of the most popular destinations is the Patio Bellavista – a square surrounded by shops, clubs and restaurants.
