Governors Island

Hilly and green

New York City has its own car-free city oasis: Governors Island, accessible via a free ferry ride. The island is open to visitors from 1 May through the end of October. Every year, the Trust for Governors Island puts together a diverse programme with exhibits, art fairs and concerts. Stroll past the colonial houses and the fort, or stop for a bite to eat at some of the city's best food trucks. Visitors are also rewarded with the most amazing view of the Manhattan skyline.

Easter Parade

Dust off your Easter bonnet!

Every year during Easter the streets of Manhattan play host to a colourful parade. An authentic New York tradition, the Easter Parade dates back to 1870.

In those days, residents would head out on Easter morning and parade around town in their Sunday best. Over time, the parade has evolved into a huge fancy dress party that even includes dressed up pets. The lavish hats and headdresses are a very popular feature. The parade begins at 10 a.m. on 49th Street and heads north along Fifth Avenue to 57th Street. For the best parade views grab a spot near St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Central Park

The city's green heart slowly awakens from its winter sleep and begins to blossom. Spring in Central Park is truly delightful. Take a guided bike ride or walking tour to learn more about the park.

The best place to watch the parade is from Battery Park on the southern tip of the island. Fleet Week parties take place throughout the city.

Fleet Week

Sailors and Navy ships

The annual New York Fleet Week takes place at the end of May. For one full week, the city embraces everything Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. During the seven days you can tour the impressive Naval ships and admire the military air shows. Fleet Week opens with the traditional Parade of Ships. The vessels pass under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into the New York Harbour and onwards to Manhattan.
