Film buffs, grab your calendars! From 24 June through 2 July, Bologna will host the 31st edition of the Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival. During this one special week, film fans from around the world will flock to the city for special screenings at some amazing locations. This summer watch classic films such as Vertigo, Mary Poppins and The Matrix at different locations such as on the top of a former tram depot in Peckham Rye, on the roof of a trendy club in Shoreditch and at the Kensington Roof Gardens.

Cine Thisio takes classic movies to a whole other level: this outdoor cinema is nestled at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens. The screen inside the walled-in garden where movie-goers sit on red folding chairs has been showing films since the 1930s, making this the oldest outdoor cinema in the city. The owner runs the projector and the rest of the family sells tickets, pours drinks and serves up popcorn.
What better place to scout for unconventional film locations than in New York City. After all, this iconic city has often been portrayed on the big screen.
The non-profit organisation Rooftop Films showcases the work of (still) unknown film makers at unusual sites such as the beach on Coney Island, an old cannery in Brooklyn and the Socrates Sculpture Park.
The selection ranges from colourful animations to obscure documentaries: the programme is as diverse as the settings. After the film, viewers are treated to live music.
