Non-stop ADE events

ADE offers a comprehensive night and daytime programme. ADE by Day provides a platform for the electronic music industry. Throughout the city, you will find countless conferences, lectures, workshops and demonstrations, presented by leading names from the industry. The topics are very broad. For example, the DeLaMar Theater will host a conference on sustainability and innovation in the music industry, under the banner of ADE Green. The irreverent cult cinema LAB111 is a creative incubator where you can watch films and documentaries made by inspiring artists from the electronic music scene.

ADE by night is all about partying. The evening and night-time programme includes 2500 artists at 140 locations around the city, so 24 hours a day almost isn't enough. The edgy NDSM area in Amsterdam Noord offers two days of events, from noon to 11 pm, hosting the colourful Into the Woods Festival, known for its unique and attractive decor. Or how about dancing on a former pirate radio broadcasting boat? The Noorderschip is one of the newest clubs in Amsterdam and features an awesome ADE programme.

Looking ahead to ADE 2018 with DJ Antal Heitlager

DJ Antal Heitlager is the founder and owner of Rush Hour Records, a temple for music lovers, located at the Spuistraat in Amsterdam.

What does ADE mean to you?

The great thing about ADE is that it draws a large number of artists, DJs and music fans to the city. For the store and for me these are very busy days. And I really love that energy. During ADE I perform as a DJ, but we also put together a programme for the store with artists offering small intimate shows. We also sell exclusive editions of albums and songs that we offer during ADE. We organize night-time events and play in an RA football cup every year to raise funds for the organization HELP REFUGEES.

What is happening at Rush Hour Records during ADE?

Every day, after the store closes, we host intimate performances of up to two hours by various artists. I cannot reveal the programme yet, as that would take away from the intimate character of the shows. But you can look forward to a great mix of established and upcoming artists. Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM Radio also comes in for a day to host his radio show from the store and broadcast interviews with very interesting artists. Last year, Kerri Chandler, Nina Kraviz and Gilles Peterson presented a radio show from the store. We also have many exclusive products in store from labels and brands that offer something interesting during ADE. Last year, for example, Louie Vega from Masters At Work launched his new album in our store and sold exclusive autographed copies.

What is your ultimate ADE tip?

Right now it is too early to provide a concrete tip. But I would recommend to take a careful look at the ADE website. There is a lot going on in the city at 140 locations, for five full days, so you will always find something exciting. Like last year, we will be hosting our club night on Thursday evening in Club Shelter in the A'Dam Toren.

What makes this edition different from previous years?

It's interesting to see how much ADE has grown over the years. And that’s really mostly because of Amsterdam as a city and the Dutch talent for organization. I think we should be really proud of that. I have been involved in this industry for more than 20 years and have attended many festivals abroad. But I have never seen any event as large and as well organized as ADE. Originally, electronic dance music is an American music genre. So it's interesting to see that in October, during ADE in the Netherlands, the entire dance music scene presents itself here on the biggest and best musical platform in the world. Every year I think: “Isn't it amazing that this takes place right in my backyard”.

What does ADE mean to Elvin Usidame?

Elvin Usidame is a programmer at legendary Amsterdam music venue Paradiso. He also plays in the Eindhoven band Hunting the Robot and, together with his brother, forms the DJ duo AfrikaBoomNada.

What are you most looking forward to in this edition?

This year's selection is so diverse that it will be hard to make a choice. This will be my first ADE as programmer for Paradiso so I am looking forward to the hectic week. It will be an opportunity to check out all our various concerts/ parties and see so many different audiences enjoying themselves.

Wat does ADE mean to you?

For me, ADE is the ultimate electronic music celebration where everything comes together. It really offers something for everyone. There is lots to experience and learn for professionals, who always love to attend. But even if you only attend one event a year, ADE provides many experiences in practically every single genre.

What I love about Paradiso is that we host the best in the world, but there is still lots to discover during the festival. Paradiso is and remains an important player during ADE.

What is going on in Paradiso during ADE?

Every year we program all the Paradiso venues, including Paradiso Noord. That is where we host the more intimate parties. On Wednesday we have booked SOPHIE. This is quite a special performance because she rarely plays in the Netherlands and just launched a great album. The programme also includes Carl Craig b2b Moodymann, KLEAR with AJ Tracey, GAIA (Armin van Buuren’s ‘’secret’’ project), drum and bass with Hospitality, disco/house with Hunee & Motor City Drum Ensemble on Sunday and much more! We are of course a live music venue at heart so we host a lot of live performances during ADE, including Jon Hopkins, Róisín Murphy and Orbital.

What is your ultimate ADE tip?

If I had to choose one, I would say ADE LIVE. We are organizing this for the third year in a row, together with the Melkweg and Sugarfactory. We are one of the few pop stages to participate in ADE so we have decided to dedicate two days to live electronic music. That is very unique in the ADE programme and here you will find activities that are typically part of the daytime programme, and aren't offered at night. During these two days, you can catch big names such as Róisín Murphy and Eefje de Visser, or discover surprising smaller acts, such as LYZZA, Haiku Hands or Ama Lou.

Curious about the full programme?

Check the ADE website for a detailed overview of all the venues, performers and events.
