Magical Mauritius

Mauritius: the sun-drenched island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Almost 150 years ago, writer Mark Twain wrote that heaven was copied after Mauritius. We travelled to this brand-new KLM destination and concluded that Twain was absolutely right.

Explore Mauritius with Anderson

Anderson Mercure (29) was born and raised on Mauritius and knows the island inside and out. His work as a tour guide has only enhanced his in-depth knowledge. For iFly he took us to the Central Market in Port Louis, his favourite beach of Gris Gris, and of course the Seven Coloured Earth, the island's botanical garden. And we travelled by speedboat to Le Morne!

Cultural melting pot

Mauritius ranks high as a preferred honeymoon destination. Year-round warm weather, deep blue ocean and swaying palm trees: it doesn't get more romantic and idyllic than this. But the island also offers an unexplored and fascinating cultural melting pot.

Mauritius is composed of people and cultures from all around the world. The Arabs were the first to arrive, followed by the Portuguese. But it was the Dutch who stuck around in the 16th century and named the island after their Prince Maurits. As the island has no native population, you will find Hindus, Christians and Muslims living peacefully side by side. Colourful Indian temples, mosques and Catholic churches dot the entire island.
