New nightlife is the fourth in a series of four ‘Open Your World’ articles, a cooperation between Heineken and KLM. During a six week period we crossed land and ocean to meet new people, and to discover and capture new experiences in 12 KLM destinations. From Rotterdam to Osaka and from Tel Aviv to Austin, every article features three hotspots in three destinations, all seen through the eyes of a local.
Hi I’m Carla, and I’m 25 years old. I work in advertising and occasionally as a guest writer for the city magazine @geheimtipphamburg. I’m originally from Berlin, but I lost my heart to Hamburg. I love to explore new places to eat, drink and party and I’m always up for an extraordinary night out on the town.
Salt & Silver Zentrale is the perfect place to start your Friday night out. Not only are the Mexican/South American food and drinks by far the most delicious I know, there's also no better place for a view over Hamburg than here since the restaurant is situated slightly above the port.
There is a fascinating story behind this stylish restaurant: both Jo and Cozy, the two guys behind the project ‘Salt&Silver’, are travelers, surfers and passionate chefs. They have already published two books about their favourite travel destinations and food. I love them for being so creative, positive and open-minded - and that's also the vibe that you feel when visiting Zentrale.
With so many evenings spent with nice people from all over the world (we even met Obama’s sister there once) the Weinladen is a very special place to me in Hamburg and my choice when it comes to wine. Stephi and her team are the kindest and coolest sommeliers I know and they have a very exclusive wine cellar. They support a lot of young, new winegrowers and there's always a new wine to try. Since Stephi is very welcoming and likes to share her wine knowledge, it's very unlikely that you will ever leave this place sober.
The Weinladen is situated on the Paul-Roosen-Straße, my favourite in St. Pauli or maybe even in Hamburg. With one very small narrow street, lots of small houses, many cozy restaurants and bars especially in summer there's nothing better than to sit in front of Stephi’s little place and soak up the atmosphere.
Every building has its own story and this one is no exception. The Bunker is probably the most exceptional place when it comes to partying in Hamburg. Where else can you dance in an old bunker? Keeping a Second World War relict in the middle of the city as a memorial and making it a place where young people can meet, dance and have a good time, is a concept I really like. By day the bunker hosts the f.e.a radio station and a music school, and by night the best nightlife in Hamburg takes over.
My name is Ido Cohen, and I am 30 years old. I current work for a tech company but in my previous job I was in charge of the international marketing of the city of Tel Aviv. I think I am the right person to show you my city and the hidden gems of its nightlife.
Tel Aviv is a city full of surprises. Every night is a night to go out. With its incredible culinary scene, crazy clubs and parties and a strong creative community, Tel Aviv nightlife makes for an unforgettable experience for anyone who chooses to try it.
If you want a pure example of Tel Aviv's nightlife, Port Sa‘id would be it. With its hipster vibe and a take on Middle Eastern food by top Israeli celebrity chef Eyal Shani, Port Sa‘id is the place to chill and meet friends after a hard day’s work.
Hidden in a small alleyway off Allenby near the corner of Rothschild, you can find Sputnik. This is the newest place to chill, drink, and listen to good music, with the occasional live act and various performances by top Tel Aviv DJs. Sputnik attracts a mixed audience every night and it is a great place to start your evening with drinks and some delicious food to share. I like to go there on Wednesdays for a relaxed evening with friends.
The best place to have a drink in Tel Aviv at the moment is at Phi. I usually go there on dates, not because it’s romantic, but the cool loose vibe makes for a very casual, relaxed setting. They serve healthy cocktails and vegan food and have a variety of seating areas in the minimalistic style of a Japanese garden.
For anyone who visits the city and wants to see something different, I truly recommend the unique experience that is the Cuckoo’s Nest. Part bar, part art gallery, the Cuckoo's Nest is located in an antique shop and will give you an experience you’ve surely never had before. With a weekly selection of art to admire, you will always have something new to explore here.
When you walk through the door of Teder, you enter an indoor garden that serves as a hangout for the residents of Tel Aviv. There is live music and outdoor partying combined with amazing food from the Romano restaurant. Teder has the perfect vibe. It’s unpretentious and chilled with outside tables in the middle of an old gallery. A perfect place to sit with friends for hours. There is good music, beer in jars for sharing and amazing pizza on the menu.
Last stop for the night is Ramses. Ramesses is a group of bars stretched over the revived area of the Greek market in the centre of Jaffa’s old town area. Every night, the street fills with people having a drink in the open-air spots while enjoying amazing food.
My name is Kosuke Higashine. I am 35 years old and was born and raised in the outskirts of Osaka. Next to my daily job as an architect, I love to discover new places in the city. You can always find me out and about exploring the city. Maybe one day I’ll be your guide in Osaka.
Namba is an area in the centre of the city where modern day Osaka mixes beautifully with the Osaka of the good old days. Many large commercial facilities such as department stores and luxury brand shops are located around Namba Station and Shinsaibashi Station. But there are also many tiny buildings and many smaller boutique shops and nice cafes. You can have fun just walking around here.
The beautiful restaurant is situated in the back of a quiet alley in the neighborhood of Namba. It was a TATAMI store before (Tatami is a type of mat used as flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms). The pillars and windows in the restaurant still show the legacy of that time. One of the things that make this place so beautiful is the Japanese garden at the back. You can enjoy its atmosphere throughout the year while eating Japanese handmade soba. Traditional cuisine in a modern atmosphere!
Stroll through the Hozenji Alley and soak up the typical old-school Japanese street atmosphere on your way to Slainte Mhor, a new little bar. You can order your favourite cocktail but my advice would be to leave it all to the bartender. He will surprise you with the coolest flavors and amazing looking drinks.
The Buggy recently opened in Osaka. This place is everything a club should be! It is a dining bar that looks like a secret basement for adults. Inside there is good music and cool art by the Buggy himself, an illustrator. The bar serves creative Mexican cuisine and New York style pizza and pasta. Everything there is phenomenal and I highly recommend this restaurant. The Buggy continues to evolve.
Club Circus is a new venue in Namba and probably the biggest ‘underground’ club in Osaka. The style of music varies quite a bit from one night to the next thanks to frequent guest artists. If more obscure house and techno music are your thing, there’s a decent chance you will find your place at Circus. Upstairs you can find a more relaxed bar with up and coming DJs.
Kamon Hotel is a new spot in central Osaka. It is a hotel with a great restaurant and bar. The rooftop in particular is a nice place for a romantic drink with a view. Here you can experience the creative and real atmosphere of Japan. Kamon is a fusion of old and new, traditional Japanese vibes and typical Western qualities.
