Top5 2018Special 03 Nr5 Thailand

Railay Beach, Thailand

Picture yourself in paradise

A beach that's only accessible by boat teases the imagination. Especially a beach as stunning as Railay Beach in the Thai province of Krabi. It doesn't surprise us that this destination made the top 5. Although connected to the mainland, access to the beach is blocked by the surrounding limestone cliffs, preventing road access. This means you can only get around on foot, lending Railay Beach a unique laidback vibe.

Top5 2018Special 04 Nr4 Hawaii

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, United States

Lava deserts, steaming craters and lush rainforest

Hawaii emerged from a group of volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean. Living proof of all this activity can be found in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. This diverse park offers walks through lava tunnels and rainforest, and a chance to see one of the most active volcanoes in the world: the Kilauea volcano. Enjoy a guided hike across solidified lava fields to observe the liquid lava. With luck you may even watch from the boat as sizzling, smoking streams of lava flow into the Pacific Ocean.

Top5 2018Special 05 Nr3 Giraffe
Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor, Kenya

Special company for breakfast

Having breakfast with a giraffe is not an everyday occurrence. But your stay at the Giraffe Manor includes a visit from these friendly giants. The colonial mansion near Nairobi is the only hotel in the world with its own herd of spotted long-necked beauties. In the morning, the giraffes love to poke their heads into the breakfast room for a treat. You're also likely to encounter other wildlife, including impalas, antelopes and wild boars.

Top5 2018Special 06 Nr2 Mauritius

Heaven on earth in tropical Mauritius

Swaying palm trees and a turquoise ocean, gurgling waterfalls and rainbow-coloured soil; American writer Mark Twain described Mauritius as heaven on earth. And our readers must agree as this destination was voted number two in the top 5. This tiny island in the Indian Ocean boasts 330 km of white sandy beaches. Centuries of emigration has transformed Mauritius into a cultural melting pot with a relaxed vibe and diverse cuisine.

    Sagano bamboebos, Japan

Wander through a green forest of wispy bamboo

A 500-metre-long trail flanked by towering bamboo: a stroll through the Sagano Bamboo Forest in Kyoto is like an out of body experience. The dense rows of bamboo and hypnotizing rustle of the leaves can have you almost in a trance. For the Japanese, bamboo symbolizes strength and is believed to ward off all evil. This explains why many Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan are often found near bamboo groves.
