      Savour the white gold

      Fiera Internazionale del Tartufo Bianco d’Alba

      Bright red trees and white truffles in the ground: autumn in the Italian town of Alba is not only a feast for the eyes but also for the nose and palate. For over a month, the tiny town near Turin lives and breathes the white gold: truffles. These delicacies are only harvested for two months a year and are found almost exclusively in Italy.

      Cooking demonstrations, workshops and wine tastings share the limelight with a Medieval donkey race and special truffle auction. The white truffle market sells more than just truffles. Here you will find everything truffle under the sun. Each morsel is carefully inspected by a special committee so you can be sure of the quality.

          Battle of the ribs

          Toronto Ribfest

          One of the unmistakable joys of summer is the smell of barbecue on a balmy evening. Toronto kicks off the summer season with its yearly Toronto Ribfest. The event is held every year during the Canada Day Weekend and attracts more than 150,000 visitors. ‘Ribbers’ flock from all over North America to show off their barbecue tricks in Toronto’s Centennial Park. Things get quite heated in the fight for ‘Best Ribs’, a title awarded by a professional jury.

          In addition to tons of great food, the event also features live music, rides and a spectacular fireworks show to conclude Canada Day.

              Vegetarian feast in Thailand

              Tesagan Gin Je

              The annual Tesagan Gin Je festival in Thailand proves that food events are not just about meat or fish. The story goes that the festival was founded in the southern province of Phuket when a travelling Chinese opera ensemble were struck by an unknown disease and stranded there. The local vegetarian diet nurtured them back to health. During the festival, around the end of October, you will find many places in Thailand adorned with yellow and red flags. These signal that the eatery serves food according to the rules of the festival. Meat and fish are strictly forbidden, but strong smelling foods, such as onions and garlic, are also avoided.

              The heart of the festival in Bangkok is in Chinatown. Endless rows of food stalls offer everything from noodle soup to vegetarian satay and sweet cakes. The largest concentration of food vendors congregate around Charoen Krung Road. At night, you can watch traditional Chinese opera performances or observe the rituals at the many temples.

                  Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival

                  September is the best month to visit the Irish town of Galway. That is, for oyster fans. This is when the annual Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival takes place: the oldest oyster festival in the world. Galway Bay is famous for this delicacy: the narrow inlet with clean, clear salt water makes for the perfect oyster habitat.

                  Enjoy oyster tastings, demonstrations, performances by Irish bands and the annual World Oyster Opening Championship. The highlight of the festival is the Mardi Gras event where revellers feast on oysters and Prosecco before dancing the night away.

                      Outrageous tomato feast

                      La Tomatina

                      Your mother probably taught you not to play with your food. A wise lesson, but one that can easily be forgotten at La Tomatina. On every last Wednesday of August, the sleepy town of Buñol in the Spanish province of Valencia becomes a chaotic battlefield of crushed tomatoes. The highlight of the festival is the tomato fight. For an hour, you can pelt anyone on the streets with tomatoes. 

                      Hundreds of kilos of these juicy vegetables are hurled through the air and the street is transformed into a giant tub of tomato sauce. Although this year’s event has just taken place, locals have already set the date for the next edition: 29 August 2018. So you have plenty of time to start practising your tomato toss.
