The beauty of Canada

Nature at its finest

Mossy rain forests, reflecting mountain lakes and endless starry skies: a six-week trip through the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta inspired German director of photography Florian Nick to create this amazing short film. “I could really feel how Canadaʼs culture is shaped by nature. The Canadians love and respect the beautiful places they live in and you get a feeling of these good vibes when talking to them”

What drives you as a filmmaker?

“My ideas and visions as a filmmaker are inspired by the diversity of our planet with its stunning places to be traveled, extraordinary people to be met and inspiring stories to be told. This drives my passion of capturing unique moments and images from around the globe in an authentic and meaningful way. As my work is particularly dedicated to the outdoors, sports, travel and lifestyle, my fascination for nature had me specialize in time-lapse photography as a powerful method of creating impressive high-quality imagery of stunning landscapes.”

What was the idea behind creating this video?

“I wanted to create a film that raises awareness of our planet by showing nature from one of its most beautiful sides. After a few weeks of planning and preparation, I spent six weeks traveling and shooting in Canada. I brought home tons of footage which took me about three to four months to process and put together in this film. The Western provinces of Canada seemed to be a great fit due to its vast landscapes and wild backcountry. This is where I tried to access the most picturesque locations possible. I made use of time-lapse as a powerful shooting technique for capturing dynamic landscapes in very high quality.”

Why is the video called ALIVE?

“The title ALIVE connects with the final shot of the film. After showing nature in all its purity without any signs of civilization throughout the film, a human figure is suddenly revealed at the very end. The person raises its arms and embraces the privilege of being alive on this wonderful planet. It stands for the respect and responsibility that every human should show towards our environment – not only in order to be alive but to stay alive.”

What do you love most about Canada?

“Overall, I could really feel how Canadaʼs culture is shaped by nature. The Canadians love and respect the beautiful places they live in and you get a feeling of these good vibes when talking to them. I got to know some really pleasant and laid-back people who made me feel very welcome.”

What is your favorite place in this video?

“My absolute favorite place was Lake OʼHara in the Canadian Rockies. It is only accessible with a shuttle bus and spots are very limited in order to preserve the nature from too many visitors. I hiked up to a view point for sunset and found one of the most captivating sceneries I have ever experienced. Even my widest lens was not able to capture it to the full extent.”
